This is a great option for the discerning hunter or anyone who wants an exceptionally trained Labrador Retriever. With this premier service, we work directly with you to provide you with a hunting companion that meets your specific hunting and home needs.
Selecting your own Custom Trained Retriever
You specify the color and sex of Labrador Retriever you want and Otter Tail Kennels will do all the work!
We will:
- research and locate a great litter of pups with the color and sex you requested
- contact breeder and make deposit, for your pup
- pick your puppy up from the breeder
- raise your puppy at our home and kennel until training is completed
- socialize and train the puppy for your specific hunting style and needs
We do extensive research before we buy a puppy for you, and only work with reputable breeders who breed from proven dogs (competition and/or hunting). In addition, we also look for breeders that do an excellent job of socializing the puppies.
After we bring the puppies home we continue socializing, start housebreaking, work on obedience, introductions and training.

We offer Custom Trained Retrievers at the following levels:
Hunter Ready
Your Hunter Ready dog is ready to join you for a waterfowl and/or upland hunt.
This is our most popular custom trained retriever. They are well mannered dogs, are pleasant to be around, and have been trained in the following:
- On-lead obedience on the following commands: sit, here, kennel, and heel
- Taught not to bite or jump on people
- Crate trained
- House exposure with other dogs and children
- Kennel exposure
- Sit prior to eating
- Exposed to gun shots, live and dead birds, hunting boats, duck calls and cover
- Collar conditioned and e-collar trained
- Force fetched
- Retrieving with enthusiasm both directions
- Steady
- Delivering to a sitting position and holding the bumper/bird properly
- Obedient on and off leash
- Jump in and out of a pickup
- Ducks and pheasants shot over him/her
- Flyaway training
- Intro to doubles, concept not solid
- Land marks past 100 yards
- Water marks past 70 yards
- Solid understanding of marking concepts
In summary, everything that is included in our Basic Waterfowl and Upland Hunting programs.
Custom trained retriever price $9,000. Price includes:
- cost of puppy and transportation of puppy from breeder to our home
- 7 months of training
- all live birds shot over your dog both ducks and pheasants
- housing and boarding of the dog including several months inside our home crate training and housebreaking
- all dog food
- all vet bills
- any other costs until transitioned to owner at approximately 9 month of age.
Advanced Hunting (including blind retrieves and multiple marks)
If you are an avid waterfowl hunter, this is the dog for you! Your Advanced Hunting dog will be comfortable hunting both upland and waterfowl, but he/she will really shine in the duck or goose blind.
This is the best of the best. This custom trained retriever is well-mannered , pleasant to be around, and has been trained in the following:
- Comfortable with guns, birds, boats, water, cover, decoys, duck calls
- Socialized with kids and family life
- Crate trained
- Obedient on and off-lead
- Boat and blind manners
- Whistle trained
- Collar conditioned and e-collar trained
- Force fetched
- Steady to shot
- Retrieving single and double marks on land and water
- Delivering to heel and hand
- Solid understanding of marking concepts
- Ducks and pheasants shot over him/her
- Quartering, flushing and flyaway training
- Honoring (great for those hunting with multiple dogs)
- Doing blind retrieves on land and water (ability to handle)
In summary, everything that is included in our Basic Waterfowl and Upland Hunting programs and our Advanced Waterfowl program.
Custom trained retriever price $15,000. Price includes:
- cost of puppy and transportation of puppy from breeder to our home
- 13 months of training
- all live birds shot over your dog both ducks and pheasants
- housing and boarding of the dog including several months inside our home crate training and housebreaking
- all dog food
- all vet bills
- any other costs until transitioned to owner at approximately 15-17 month of age.

When you buy a custom trained dog from Otter Tail Kennels, we go the extra mile to make sure you are completely satisfied with your new hunting partner.
